Semarang 14 December - The Wolbachia program will be held in Semarang City in January 2023. This program aims to reduce the number of dengue fever in the city of Semarang and the details of the program are implanting Wolbachia bacteria in mosquitoes.
If the mosquito breeds with the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the Wolbachia bacteria will inhibit the transmission of the DHF virus carried by mosquitoes and the Wolbachia bacteria will inhibit the transmission of the DHF virus carried by local mosquitoes and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.
According to the Head of the Semarang City Health Office (Kepala Dinkes Kota Semarang), Abdul Hakam, Semarang City will also become a pilot project after the Wolbachia program is implemented in Yogyakarta, and in Semarang City there will be a massive outreach before the Wolbachia program is implemented.
"For implementation locations in three sub-districts with high dengue cases, Tembalang, Banyumanik and Ngaliyan Districts," he explained, Tuesday (12/13/2022). Hakam said that the wolbachia method would be carried out by breeding mosquitoes from eggs that had been planted with wolbachia bacteria and the eggs would be placed in the middle of the community until they hatched and reproduced for six months.
"The offspring will contain the Wolbachia bacteria and prevent the transmission of the DHF virus to humans," he said. Hakam hopes that every week 8 million eggs can be distributed to areas with high DHF rates in Semarang City and because of this it will break the chain of DHF transmission and reduce the number of DHF in Semarang City.
He said dengue fever in Semarang City reached 5,148 cases, while DHF and Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS) reached 809 cases. "For cases of death, up to now it has reached 32 cases, of which 52 percent are men," he added.
