The Faculty of Engineering (FT) Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) developed used tire waste recycling technology to support the circular economy in the city of Semarang. This innovation was realized through a Community Service (PKM) program entitled “Development of Crumb Rubber Production Technology and Supply Chain Management through Recycling Used Tire Waste”.
The programme involved a team led by Heru Agus Santoso, Ph.D., dean of FT Udinus, with lecturers Dewa Kusuma Wijaya, M.Sc., and Nur Islahudin, M.T., and six students. They are Yestika Nur Jayanti, Rano Islamiyanto, Muhammad Sriaji Nugroho, Bima Ananta Kurniawan, Alfaturachman Maulana Pahlevi, and Zidan Alfarezi Sukoco.
This program responds to the increasing waste of used tires due to the growing number of vehicles in Semarang. The Udinus FT team has designed a crumb rubber machine that can process used tire waste into value-added industrial raw materials, such as asphalt mixtures, sports field surfaces, playgrounds, and shoe components.
In order to be able to operate the machine and manage the waste supply chain system independently, the team also provided training to Repro MSMEs. The machine has been handed over to Repro MSMEs after the fabrication process in the integrated laboratory of FT Udinus.
Heru Agus Santoso, Ph.D., stated that this technology helps address the accumulation of used tire waste while also creating economic opportunities. The machine design has also been published in a scientific journal to allow for replication in other areas. This program, which will run for six months from July to December 2024, is expected to serve as a model for waste management that has a positive impact on the environment, society, and the economy.
