Sumala is a horror movie inspired by a real story that occurred in 1948 in Semarang. A married couple named Soedjiman and Sulastri, really wanted a child. They secretly made a contract with the devil to get a descendant.
A ritual was performed, where Sulastri drank various offerings to broker the deal. As a result, Sulastri became pregnant, and a feeling of happiness came over them. However, the happiness turned out to be false.
Sulastri gave birth to twins: one beautiful human and the other of demon descent. The demon child was named Kumala, but she was not allowed to live, so her life was taken on the spot. Meanwhile, the other child lived as a retarded princess, named Sumala.
As Sumala grew up, mysterious events began to occur. Sumala exhibited strange behavior that sent the whole village into a tizzy. Whenever a child died in a tragic way, the villagers began to feel frightened and considered Sumala to be the bearer of disaster. Soedjiman is blamed for the chaos caused by Sumala, while only Sulastri knows the reason behind Sumala's revengeful actions. Watch the full movie in theaters.
